PLYMOUTH —
Firefighters spent almost six hours Sunday night battling a remote brush fire in the Pine Hills section of Manomet.
Plymouth deputy fire chief Stanley Eldridge said the fire burned four to five acres in a steeply-sloped, wooded area off Beaver Dam Road. While no homes were threatened, he said firefighters had “a real tough time” getting trucks to the site.
Smoke from the fire was reported around 6 p.m. Firefighters called in a county fire plane and completely extinguished the blaze shortly before midnight. Two firefighters had minor injuries. Eldridge said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
“It’s fortunate that this fire came late in the afternoon, so there was no wind,” he said.
This was the latest of about 20 brush fires that South Shore towns have seen since April, including Marshfield, Duxbury, Hingham, Halifax, Randolph and previous fires in Plymouth. Fire officials saydry conditions created by a near snow-free winter are contributing to the fires.
